Ben's Bar

Ce site Français est encore en construction

"Let me start with saying, that many years ago, when Hetty and I started this business, I had no real idea where it all would lead to, I surely could not have imagined that I would be writing this story about my bar and the large range of delicious beer."

When we opened in 2003, we only had one refrigerator with some soft drinks, bottles of Jupiler beer, Kriekenbier and Chouffe beer, which was my first introduction to Belgian specialty beer while living in the Ardennes. As the renovations progressed and my knowledge of Belgian specialty beers expanded, the bar also had to be bigger, so I would be able to market these beers.

The current bar downstairs originates from a café in Peer and was meant to be demolished. Because the owner thought it was a shame to let it go to waste, the three of us deconstructed the bar in Peer and rebuilt it to its original state in our own bar! We are glad things turned out this way and are still very content with it.

We found the first 3 beer taps on a brocante market, just outside the village of Vielsalm. It was the first step of creating an awesome looking bar.

After some tough negotiating with the brasserie and our beverage supplier, they agreed to install a tap installation, with the commitment that we would serve Jupiler beer from this installation for at least 5 years. This was an excellent deal for us, because we wanted this anyway!

After a while the question arose what kind of beer we should serve from the second tap. Luckily this problem was fixed in no time after a visit from Alain, the owner of the Val Dieu brewery. But there were two kinds of Val Dieu available for the tap, and it would be better to have both on tap instead of just one, so we needed yet another tap.

Alain helped us out immensely with providing the third tap in our bar. In return we have promoted Val Dieu beer in our bar, but also every year at our stand at the Motorbeurs in Utrecht, which we are known for after all these years!

But after a few years of testing new beers, the desire for more delicacies on the barrel became ever greater.

Because of our special interest in smaller breweries we contacted the St. Feuillien brewery. After selling a different range of beers in bottle from this brewery, the conversation of beer on the tap became more important, because beer from the barrel is so much tastier!

In 2015 a double cooled classic tap was installed, which made the look of the bar even better and from which the delicious St. Feuillien beer flows.

Currently, in 2018, we have about 20 different kinds of specialty beer, cooled and ready to serve. Among which there is always a beer to anyone’s choice.

In addition to beer, we also have a very nice selection of wine. The wine selection is constantly changing depending on the season and our taste.
